The Radiance Standard

Our product bar. What has to be true before anything gets shelf space here: genuinely non-comedogenic behaviour, a considered formulation, and a label that survives a close reading.

The premise

The wellness aisle’s favourite promise has earned most of the scepticism aimed at it. “Chemical-free” is meaningless, natural is not a safety rating, and some of the most reliably non-irritating ingredients in dermatology are synthetic. So this page isn’t about purity. It is about a shorter list of things going onto the same face every day for the next thirty years, and being deliberate about all of them.

Two rules do the heavy lifting. First: nothing that reliably congests this particular skin, whatever the label claims. Second: no phthalates, and no fragrance obscuring what is actually in the bottle. Everything else is negotiable.

What “non-comedogenic” really means

Nothing, legally. There is no regulator anywhere that defines the term, sets a threshold, or tests for it before a brand prints it on a carton. The historical evidence base is a set of mid-century rabbit-ear assays, single ingredients painted onto rabbit ears, which is why you can still find comedogenicity “ratings” of 0 to 5 circulating online for oils that behave perfectly well in a finished formula.

The usable version is a formulator’s: comedogenicity is a property of a whole product, at a given concentration, on a given skin, under a given climate. Coconut oil is a problem at 30% and unremarkable at 0.5%. Isopropyl myristate has a genuinely bad reputation and appears in perfectly good sunscreens. Which is why the standard here ends in a patch test on the jawline rather than a lookup table.

Why the phthalate line is drawn hard

Phthalates are plasticisers. In cosmetics their main historical role was as fragrance fixatives, making a scent linger, and in flexible packaging. Several have been restricted in cosmetic use in the EU, and the concern that drove those restrictions is endocrine activity at cumulative, low-level exposure across many products at once.

The evidence is genuinely mixed on individual compounds, and nobody should be frightened by a hand cream. But the calculation for a daily, lifelong, whole-face routine is different from the calculation for one product. Given a choice between two good formulas, one of which discloses fragrance components and confirms phthalate-free status, the choice makes itself. This is a preference expressed as a rule, and it costs nothing.

Passes the standard
  • Read only the first six ingredientsConcentration follows order until you hit the 1% line. If a heavy ester or fragrance appears in the top six, the rest of the list barely matters.
  • Fragrance is an ingredient, not a finish“Parfum” anywhere near the top is a fail. Unscented formulas are not a sacrifice; they are the point.
  • Get phthalate-free in writingBrands that avoid them say so plainly. Brands that hedge, or answer a direct question with a paragraph about “compliance”, have answered.
  • No more than one new active at a timeTwo weeks minimum between introductions. Otherwise a reaction is unattributable and the whole routine gets blamed.
  • Test on the jaw, not the armCongestion shows up where sebaceous density is high. Five nights on one side of the jawline tells you more than a fortnight on a forearm.
  • Check it against the treatment calendarA product that is fine in February may be a bad idea the week after a Moxi. Actives are seasonal and procedure-dependent.
  • Packaging countsAntioxidants and retinoids in a wide-mouthed jar are being wasted. Airless pumps and opaque tubes are a formulation decision, not a design one.
  • If it stings, it is not workingTingle is not efficacy. Persistent stinging is a barrier under strain, the correct response is to remove something.
Glossary
Comedogenic
Tending to block a pore and form a comedone, a blackhead or whitehead. It is a property of a whole formula at a given concentration, not a fixed score for an ingredient.
Non-comedogenic
A marketing claim, not a regulated standard. No agency defines or tests it. Useful only as shorthand for “formulated with congestion-prone skin in mind”.
Phthalates
A family of plasticisers historically used to make fragrance last longer and plastics flexible. Several are restricted in cosmetics in the EU; the concern is endocrine disruption at cumulative exposure.
Parfum / Fragrance
A legal umbrella term that can conceal dozens of undisclosed components. High on an ingredient list, it is the single most common reason a product fails this standard.
Fatty alcohols
Cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl. Emollients, not drying alcohols, but heavy ones can sit badly on congestion-prone skin at high percentages.
Occlusive
An ingredient that seals water into the skin, petrolatum, dimethicone, squalane. Occlusive is not the same as pore-clogging; petrolatum is famously well tolerated.
Fungal acne
Malassezia folliculitis. Not acne at all, which is why it worsens with rich oils and esters and improves with a different, anti-fungal approach entirely.
Barrier
The stratum corneum and its lipid matrix. Almost every “my skin has suddenly turned on me” story is a barrier story, and the fix is usually subtraction.

The shortest routine that works is the one you’ll still be doing in ten years.
